Program Description

In a growing number of families, both parents, and the single parent, must work. Their school-age children often need supervision. Family well being can be assisted when parents know their children are in a safe and caring environment. The position of the After School Care Program at Emmanuel is to provide many advantages. Besides having access to playgrounds, equipment, and computers to help with homework, children are being cared for in a safe Christian environment.

Philosophy

Children are truly a gift from God that needs to be cherished and nurtured. Each child has his/her own unique and special talents that can blossom through a strong Christian Afterschool Program.

Goals & Objectives

The objective of the Afterschool Program is to provide experience for growth in both developmental skills and everyday problem-solving techniques. These goals can be accomplished through various activities and projects such as:

Arts and Crafts
Supervised Group Play
Homework Assistance
Safe Supervision
Recreational Activities
Story Time/Literacy/Books

The goals of the Afterschool Program are to affirm, love, and respect the students who attend the program, and to provide a climate conducive to personal growth.

Admission Policies

All students are required to enroll annually for the program. Application forms are available online and in the childcare office. In order to maintain the safety and well being of all students, students will need to follow the rules and regulations in order to continue in the program.

3. Permission to Play Outside Fenced Area
4. Discipline Policy

b. Thanksgiving Holidays
c. Christmas Holidays
d. New Year's Holiday
e. MLK Jr. Day
f. Good Friday
g. Memorial Day

Basic Program Elements

Activities: Planned Arts and Crafts projects, games and recreation, assisted homework time, quiet times for younger children, and snack times are just a few of the growth activities.

Homework Time: Each day after snack tme, a supervised, quiet, "homework time", is scheduled in the program. Each child is responsible for keeping track of his/her own homework assignments. The staff can provide assistance with homework, but only if the student is clear about the assignment and is taying on task. We cannot sign off in your child's agenda that we assisted them. The parent needs to review and sign.

Staff: The program staffs experienced workers. This staff works together to help each child grow in a loving and nurturing atmosphere. All staff are certified in Red Cross First Aid/CPR and are required to get annual training in child care education classes.

Communication

You may reach the After School staff by calling 704-226-1200 during the hours of operation. Daily contact between parents and staff is an important part of the Program. By sharing information concerning your child's activities and welfare, we can work together to better meet the child's needs. It is extremely important that any change in address, emergency numbers, allergies, etc. be kept current.

Newsletters are sent home monthly to keep parents informed of upcoming events, activities, and health and safety concerns.

Daily Policy - Sign In & Out

Parents must sign their child out with the time each day. On Workdays, parents are required to sign their child IN as well. This procedure is necessary for the safety of the students. Directly after school, a staff member will sign the child in and parents must sign them out. I.D. will be required if someone unfamiliar to After School staff arrives for your child.

Parents MUST contact the After School Director if their child will not attend the After School Program on a regular school day. Please leave a message if you do not speak with her prior to After School hours. This is so very IMPORTANT!

Electronic Device Policy

Electronic Devices such as cell phones may not be carried on site by students. Students may not bring I-pods, MP3 players, radios, tape or CD players, headphone, or other items generally used for "amusement" without specific permission of the teacher with administrative approval for their use in the classroom or school activity. Any of these devices that are taken up will be turned in to the childcare office.

Behavior/Discipline Policy

Children are expected to comply with all regular school rules and regulations. The discipline code for the After School Program is in accordance with the school discipline policy stated in the Parent-Student Handbook. Every child is expected to follow the rules of After School, respect staff members, other students and all property. No child is to leave the supervision of his/her teacher without expressed permission. If a child violated these standards, the action will be taken to remove the child from the group and seat him or her separately for a appropriate period of "time-out".

To provide a safe and caring environment where children can play and learn, limits are set on behavior. Limits are set for three primary reasons: (1) to prevent children from injuring themselves or others; (2) to prevent the destruction of property, materials, or equipment; (3) to help children learn respect for themselves, other children, and adults.

Consequences for unacceptable behavior problems are expected to cooperate with staff in assuring the elimination of inappropriate behavior.

Dismissal will occur at any time that a child's behavior is determined to be detrimental to his or her own well being or to the well being of others in the program. Without the warning, consequences are in place if the incident if considered too serious.

Relationship with Parents

Parents are welcome in our Program at any time. Staff will share brief information about a child's day with family members on a regular basis, if this can be done without interrupting supervision of other children. Staff members are to handle problems or issues with parents in a courteous, professional manner and the same is expected with parents to staff. After School parent-teacher conferences will be scheduled as needed/requested.
